Do the things you did at first

So much has been written about the church at Ephesus referred to in the Book of Revelation, so I was kind of reading that passage as a reminder when I read Revelation 2:5 (NIV), where it says, “Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.” Ouch!

Author Jim Collins says in his book, “Good to Great,“ that good is the enemy of great. As I was reading Revelation 2:5, I realized how easy it is for me to get ahead of God. God laid a solid foundation in me, but when I build “good” things on that foundation, I get out of God’s will and create a mess. The world is full of opportunities to do good things, but God leads us to do great things.

Prayer: Dear God my Father, you have called each of your children to do great things. Help me to not confuse “great” with “big.” Wiping the snotty nose of a child can be great. Help me to remember that doing good things is not a replacement for obedience. Help me to patiently and wholeheartedly do the great things you lead me to do. That’s a lot of “help’s” but without these I know I’ll fall into the rut of “good.” I ask my Father, in the Name of Your Son, my Savior, Jesus. Amen.
