And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

What is light? Light is unique in all of God’s creation. That’s odd.
Light is like a train moving down a railroad track, except the railroad cars are not attached. They are all moving, following each other, but they aren’t connected. That’s odd.Â
Light is also like waves on an ocean. So, light acts like both particles (bits of sand) and waves (ocean waves) at the same time. That’s odd.
These railroad cars of light are called photons. Inside each photon is a very tiny amount of energy. That’s odd. Each photon has zero mass – they are nothing but energy. There are no “grains of sand.” That’s odd.
But Wait There’s More
Each photon has momentum even though they contain no material (stuff). That’s odd.
If a photon hits something, it’s like a tiny little wreck, which is because a photon has momentum and energy. That’s really odd.
Solar cells work because photons hit the solar cell, and the energy in the photon moves from the photon to the solar cell. The solar cell converts that energy into electricity. That’s odd.
Light (photons) travels at a constant speed in a vacuum, such as space. This constant speed is so unusual that physics equations use the letter “C” for light. “C” stands for Constant. That’s odd.
Photons travel through a vacuum at a constant speed, but they slow down and change their direction when they go through air or water. However, when they come out of the air or water, they speed back up, and their direction changes. That’s odd.
Here’s Where God’s Word
Has More Than God’s Word
Now, let’s go back to Genesis 1:3. God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God didn’t tell us everything about photons. He left this for us to discover. That’s how God usually works. Whatever God says always happens. But God often doesn’t tell us all the details. He wants us to trust Him; that’s called faith.
So what’s my point? When you are reading your Bible or praying, or the Holy Spirit speaks to you, remember, God expects us to have faith in Him. And remember that there are probably many details contained within God’s word that He expects us to discover. This discovery process makes living for Jesus an adventure!
