God of the Quiet

Most of us live surrounded by noise. From cars on streets to cicadas in yards, noise constantly buffets (hits) us. Perhaps we create our own noise to exert some control within the deluge of noises that surround us.

When we enter our homes, if we’re confronted with silence then we often begin filling the silence with noise. Mobile phone pings and dings and rings contribute to this wall of noise. We stream videos that we don’t watch or a radio that we ignore. We get the dishwasher running and the spin cycle on the washing machine rev’d up. Is it any wonder that we need Alexa to stream rainfall or thunderstorms to help us sleep at night?

As Christians, we need quiet times. We need times when we fast media, when we make room for silence, when we meditate (Psalm 19:14) upon the Word of God without distractions.

“Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!”

He is God of the Quiet

Carve out your quiet time with God. Be still. Have no distractions. Unclutter your cluttered mind. Quiet your senses. “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you... (James 4:8)” Don’t allow yourself to run rabbit trails, especially about people that think they are better than you, wicked people that seem successful, unmerciful people that are trying to mess with your life.

Listen for God because He is with you and in you. He wants your full attention. Remind yourself that your life in Jesus is your eternal life. Your life in Jesus deserves higher importance than anyone or anything. Close out the noise of this world. In the silence you will find God, for He is God of the quiet.
