What Makes Life Worth Living?

Wealth. It’s what you do with it that makes life worth living.” What?!

Money message

This declaration is an actual TV AD’s catchphrase for a financial planning company. I have no idea if I’ve ever seen this TV AD before, but when I heard it, their message chilled me to the bone. We should be staggered by the implication that most people believe that money makes life worth living.

For those of us that have received Jesus as our Savior and obey His commands to demonstrate our love for Him, we know that money does NOT make life worth living.

What is money?

Most economists define money as having three purposes: a medium of exchange, a unit of account, a store of value. – Investopedia

These are the actions of money, but underneath these actions is this: Money represents power. I’m sure you’ve heard the term “purchasing power,” but money also represents social power.

Money gives us the purchasing power to “exchange” our money for “a hamburger, fries, and a soft drink.” And money’s social power enables a person to transfer their education into politics.

Good News

But here’s the thing; Jesus said, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” (Matthew 6:33 NLT) As citizens of the kingdom of God, we must not look to money to make our life worth living. Instead, we look to Jesus as our Shepherd to provide for us and to guide us. God alone makes our lives worth living. Money is just a tool. Why would we worship a tool?
