This is where I add notes and thoughts as I study the Bible. Please feel free to comment.
God is a “details” God. You know how some people are “big picture” people and some are “details” people? Well, God is both!
Here’s Exodus 20:25:  “If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stones, for if you wield your tool on it you profane it. ” This really caught my attention, for here we see God down in the details. Why does He care about the stones? Without getting into the details (😉) there were only two kinds of alters. The alter that would be built in Jerusalem according to the detailed plans that God gave Moses and alters that were built before the alter in Jerusalem. These “before” alters were made by man to worship God – these were acceptable to God. But…
Remember, Jesus is the Rock. If someone fashioned stones without God’s instructions, then they spoke of heresy. They weren’t from God. Instead, they were from the mind of a man, which made them “profane.” The same is true for us. We must receive Jesus as He is, as we find Him. If we “hew” the Rock we are creating an idol, something from God but altered by man. Yikes! Let’s take Jesus as He is.
