Ecclesiastes, written by King Solomon, is classified as a book of wisdom, and God gave us a valuable promise in Ecclesiastes 11:1.
“Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.”
The New Living Translation says, “Send your grain across the seas, and in time, profits will flow back to you.” Some theologians think Solomon may have been drawing upon his experience with his grain trading by sea. What is sure is that Jesus is in this verse. We know this because, in 1 Corinthians 1:30, we are told that Jesus became to us “wisdom from God.”
The lesson for us is that delayed gratification is God’s plan. We do this in sports: first train, then compete. We do this in education: first, complete the courses and then get the degree, and we do this in music: practice before you perform. The same is true in the things of God. We must invest in the things of God before we can reap a harvest. Whatever God calls us to, we must be obedient and patient. It is good for us to keep St. Paul’s admonition.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
No matter what, as believers in Jesus, the Son of God, we can “cast our bread—time, treasures, talents—upon the waters,” for “God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19 ESV).
