Pardon me while I rant for a moment. “The world has lost its ever-loving mind!!!” Okay, I will try to calm down, but no promises!
I was reading the news online – big mistake! —and I saw a headline announcing that a new trend in fashion is see-through clothes. What!!? The purpose of clothing is to cover up, not see-through, right? So how do those things even qualify as clothes?
The purchaser says, “Hello! I’d like to buy three invisible shirts.” “Sure,” says the shop clerk as he hands three empty hangers to his customer. “That will be $314.10.”
This trend is documented in the penultimate fashion magazine, “Vogue1.” No, I don’t recommend that you check it out. I simply provided the citation as proof of this nonsense. So, what does “naked” clothing have to do with Jesus? Well, the Holy Spirit, through divine inspiration, had the author of the book of Hebrews write this statement:
“all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account”
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Hebrews 4:13.
Most of us wear clothes to cover our nakedness. Since the time when God made clothes for Adam and Eve to cover their nakedness2, clothing has worked well for us. But God isn’t like us3. In fact, He sees right through us. We are, to God, naked and exposed. That should humble us all!
God sees through the lies we tell ourselves. He sees how we justify things we want and how we want others to see us as good while we bury ugly pieces of the world in our hearts and minds. God sees all of that. It doesn’t shock Him or surprise Him, but it does break His heart because He loves us. While we are on this side of the sod, let’s root out any worldliness that has crept in. Clothing doesn’t hide our sins; we need to be clean when God sees us naked and exposed!
