And he [Jesus] said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it.
– John 2:1-12
I see the water in the stone jars as a type of Schrödinger’s cat thought experiment1. It was featured in an episode of “The Big Band Theory.” More importantly, it is an idea about quantum superposition. The Copenhagen interpretation implies that the cat in the box is simultaneously alive and dead. Yet, when looking in the box, one sees the cat either alive or dead, not alive and dead.
Did Jesus make the water into wine before a cup was drawn for the master of the feast, or did the water become wine when the cup was drawn or, perhaps, as the cup was carried to the master? This is a kind of Schrödinger’s cat that I find delightful.
So many times, God does a miracle while on the way to someplace. My thought is that the water was made wine while on the way to the master of the feast. Jesus, while on His way to the cross, made us the sources from which living water flows2.
Jesus, in Himself, when He was born, was the culmination of 4000 years3 of God’s work to reconcile His creation – humanity – to Himself4.
“This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
– 1 Timothy 2:3-4
God desires all people to be saved. As we find over and over in the Bible, only a remnant of His creation will believe and be redeemed.
Jesus launched His earthly ministry during a marriage festival, and He will finish His earthly ministry by bringing the fruit of His labor – His earth-bound, reconciled believers – up to be with Him to celebrate the marriage supper of the Lamb5, the joining of His Church to Himself and presenting us, reconciled, to the Father.
Jesus’ launch into ministry during a marriage festival is not a coincidence. God has always communicated the value and importance of marriage6. It is a picture of eternity when Jesus will be with His faithful servants throughout eternity.
