The Infinite God

A picture of the infinity symbol

The symbol for infinity is ∞. Buzz Lightyear®’s famous statement, “To infinity and beyond!” is fun but it’s not logical. The best example of infinity is God (Psalm 139:7-10 ESV).

Can you add something to that which is infinite? Can something be removed from that which is infinite? The answer to both questions is “no.”

Here’s an example to help us understand infinity. Say you have a pile of bricks that appears to be an infinite amount. If you are able to add a brick to that pile then it is not infinite. Likewise, if you remove a brick from it so there are fewer bricks then that pile is not infinite.[1] Besides, an infinite pile of bricks would fill the whole universe. There would be no place for you to exist!

Infinite Truths

1. God is Spirit for there would be no place for anyone if the infinite God was physical.
2. God is Spirit and infinite. Therefore, he must be everywhere because infinity fills all the universe and beyond.
3. When we are reborn through Jesus Christ we become children of God. That does not mean we become part of God. That is impossible: ∞+1.

You and I, before we accepted Jesus as our Savior, were spiritually dead. The Bible says it this way: “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:1-2 ESV).

No Jesus. No life. Know Jesus. Know life!

God is Spirit. Therefore, there can be no communion, no relationship between spiritually dead people and God. We know this because “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24 ESV)

In all the world there is only one way for a finite, spiritually dead person to be in fellowship with the infinite God. That way is through Jesus Christ, the Son of Man and the Son of God. Truly, as the words of Jesus are documented in John 14:6-7 (ESV), ” …”I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.

[1] There is such a thing as hyperreal numbers. For hyperreal numbers ∞+1 and ∞-1 are valid, but of course those numbers aren’t real. 😉
