The God of our mothers and fathers is with us. He is with us no less than He was with them. To Him we may draw near and by His Spirit encourage one another. - A.W. Tozer1
No, I’m not alone; I probably never will be.
The kids are all grown.
Notice that I didn’t say “moved out.”
I still have one lingerer, but I have hope.
My wife and I are happily married. We’ve had family members inform us, with great disdain, that not every married couple is happy. They say it as if our happiness is a contagious disease! Do they wish bad on us, or are they expressing jealousy in them?
Perhaps naively, my wife and I are blindly speeding headlong toward the magic number for marriage: 50 years. We recently moved from our lovely home, cherished church family, dear friends, and precious family to be near our largest scrum of grandkids because they need Jesus in their lives. The enemy tempts us to look back, to be lonely, but Lot’s wife2 has taught us not to.
Of course, we can’t watch the grandkids the way we watched our kids or how our grandparents watched us. If we did, we would be in secure facilities with three squares and a bed. My, how times have changed.
As I read a devotional on C&MA’s site, I was encouraged by Tozer’s words:
Our God is the God of today as well as of yesterday, and we may be sure that wherever our tomorrows may carry us, our faithful God will be with us as He was with Abraham and David and Paul. - A.W. Tozer
This quote reminded me that Jesus said about God, “He is not God of the dead, but of the living…3” I find great comfort in knowing that He is the same God—the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, King David, the Apostles, my grandpa, my dad, and me. I hope you find comfort in God being the God of your yesterday, today, and wherever your tomorrow may carry you.
