Not For An Attosecond

Here, where I live, we have a local politician who is prideful and believes he can ignore all authorities. I found myself beginning to fear his proposed plans. Then I read Psalm 40:4, and in an instant, the Holy Spirit changed my heart. It is a joy when He does that.

Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie!
Psalms 40:4

In that instant, I realized I did not need to fear the proud, the powerful, or the manipulators. My trust is in God! No one is greater than Him, even for an attosecond. What is an attosecond? It is one quintillionth of a second.

An attosecond is an extremely short moment, but even that is too long. We must never stop trusting God, no matter our circumstances. Ever. The tiniest crack in the strongest rock, given time, will turn that rock into sand. Likewise, any gap between God and our trust in Him can fracture our lives.

Even the briefest lapse in our trust is a chasm into which the enemy of God will pounce. We must not give the enemy this opening. I’m reminded of a quote by a Christian woman who survived the WWII concentration camps.

“Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”
— Corrie ten Boom

Our lives are full of sudden, unexpected events, of malevolent confrontations. But we never have a reason to fear. Time after time, throughout God’s Word, we are told not to be afraid but be at peace. Jesus has even given us a peace that the world cannot find. It is reserved for us who have put our faith in Him.

So, getting back to my confession that, recently, I allowed a moment of fear in my life. God is so good. I rejoice that His words in Psalms 40:4 instantly changed my heart. I needed that.

I pray that if you, too, see something, hear something, or experience something that tries to plant fear in you, for an attosecond or for your lifetime, you will find overcoming peace in the trustworthiness of God, in Christ Jesus, our Lord.
